Prop K creates a new oceanfront park by converting a failing road into a coastal park promenade. The Great Highway has been a pilot promenade for the last few years, and it’s been a huge success - it has become the City’s third most visited park. That pilot is expiring, and the southern end of the Great Highway is permanently closing due to coastal erosion. Now is the time to act to turn this failing road into an oceanfront park that everybody can enjoy.

I’m voting yes on Proposition K, and hope you’ll join me. Prop K creates a new oceanfront park by converting a failing roadway into a new park promenade. I’m excited about Prop K because [add a personal piece about why Prop K matters to you].
Have you visited the Great Highway on weekends? It’s currently in a pilot promenade, and it’s become the City’s third most popular park, proving that San Franciscans want to enjoy a coastal park promenade. But the pilot expires next year, meaning the Great Highway will return to full-time use as a roadway if nothing is done. Prop K would fix that, making the space a full-time park where people can enjoy the coast every day. It would also allow for park improvements like seating and art that aren’t possible in a weekend-only park because they get in the way of cars.
The Road is Failing. Part of the Great Highway is permanently closing because it’s falling into the ocean. Another part - which Prop K turns into a park - closes 32-65 days each year due to sand buildup. On those days the Great Highway’s traffic routes inland to a nearby 6-lane arterial, Sunset Blvd, with only a 1-2% change in average speed. A park is best for the coastal ecosystem. According to the SF Estuary Institute, a park offers “the greatest and most immediate ecological benefits” for Ocean Beach because a park promenade “would eliminate fast-moving vehicles that restrict the movement of many animals, and reduce car-associated light and noise which can disorient and harm wildlife.” Removing runoff pollution, and enabling coastal dune rehabilitation, is also why every major environmental group in the City has endorsed Prop K, from Sierra Club to Surfrider, the Golden Gate Bird Alliance, and more.
